The Bass and Flinders Centre are celebrating the anniversary of the arrival on the Sloop Norfolk into the Tamar River with a special meal and movie on the life of Matthew Flinders.
On Nov 3rd 1798 the Sloop Norfolk under the command of Matthew Flinders entered Port Dalrymple.
In 1811 Governor Macquarie visited Port Dalrymple and ordered that George Town be made the headquarters for
Northern Van Diemen’s Land.
Convict builders started work late 1815 and Major Cimitiere, commandant at Port Dalrymple, moved his administration in 1819.
